Aaron Westerberg is featured in American Artist Workshop Magazine.

"Painting instructors often ask students to consider two important relationships between the colors squeezed out on their palettes: value and temperature. By that they are asking them to consider whether one color mixture is lighter or darker than another, and whether the mixtures tend to have a warm or a cool appearance. That can be a challenge for students if they have 10 or 12 tube colors laid out on their palettes, so instructors frequently suggest that they start with just two tube colors. That’s what artist-instructor Aaron Westerberg did during a workshop he recently taught in California, where he showed students how to apply their drawing skills to creating oil paintings."-Artist Daily

Mondays at LAAFA

Here are some classes we are offering Monday next quarter:

Class: 1529 Portrait Drawing
Time and Day: 3:30pm-6:30pm - Monday

Course Description - In this class, students will learn to diagnose and solve reccurring issues in drawing the portrait. Portrait drawing can be an end in itself or the most direct path towards excellence in painting the portrait. We will explore the dynamic of working from a live model, experiencing the difference between approaching a short pose session and a long pose session. Students will be introduced to new techniques that will expand their existing skill sets, including methods to take work from class and continue finishing it at home. Photographic reference will be introduced and other common practices that portrait artists use to help them complete their work on the job. My aim is to introduce some practical solutions to creating portraits and explore unique options in drawing that will carry on into painting, giving confidence, inspiring creativity and providing finished results.

Class: 2026 Painting the Human Form
Time and Day: 3:30pm-6:30pm, Monday
Instructor: James Galindo

Course Description – This class will focus on painting the figure accurately using simplified shapes and a limited palette. Students will paint from a live model each week. The first model will pose for 2 weeks, the second model will pose for 3 weeks and the third model will pose for 5 weeks. The class will incrementally transition from monochromatic value studies to full-color figure paintings. We will use a limited palette consisting of Titanium White, Ivory Black, French Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Vermilion and Alizarin Crimson. The palette is designed to produce a variety of grays that we will use to paint the light and shadow masses of the figure. We will paint under the natural light only, so this class is great for those who wish to learn to paint the figure using a cool palette. We will address issues of composition, color, texture, light and shadow. The goal of this class is to paint the figure with energy and life-like color, to highlight what is essential in producing a powerful image and to edit what is not.

Open House is coming June 19th!

LAAFA is having their Open House June 19th from 11am-4pm! Come check out our student and teacher work. There will be teacher demos and a free uninstructed model workshop, so make sure to bring materials to paint or draw with. We will be doing a raffel for up to $100 off a class for the Summer Quarter. If you have any questions or if you need directions, call 818.708.9232 or email contactus@laafa.org
Free Beginning Drawing Class with Alex Douziech Saturday June 12th, 11am-2pm at LAAFA!

This Free Instructed Class is for people who are new to LAAFA, and have never studied with us before (one free class per person). The free drawing class will encourage you to see with your eyes and to draw with your hand. Instruction will be given in simple shading, lighting, core shadows, and learning to draw through an object. This is an excellent opportunity for students with little to no formal drawing training at all. Learning to translate what you see to paper is an exercise that will challenge you in new ways, keeping your brain and your imagination piqued. Come give it a try!

Bring your 18"x24" pad of newsprint, some charcoal, a graphite pencil, a kneaded eraser, your right brain, and enjoy a class on the house. Our hope is that you realize how important art can be in your life, for without it we merely exist.

More experienced artists can also benefit from one of these classes. Bring along your work, and during the class, our instructor will take some one-on-one time with you to give you a free portfolio review. Find out where you are with your skill level, and where you can go!

If you would like to sign up for this class, call 818.708.9232 or email contactus@laafa.org

David Kassan's Drawing Workshop June 11th-13th at LAAFA. If you are interested in taking this workshop, you must call to register or email contactus@laafa.org. Call 818.708.9232.

The focus of this course will be on life drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait. We will explore charcoal on toned paper with one pose for the entire time so that we can patiently observe and record our findings. All observation will be cumulative and used towards finishing the final work. Instruction will include discussion of practical technical information on the use of charcoal and white chalk, the properties of light on form and how the topography/depth of the face's form can be visualized and represented. Most importantly, students will learn to transcend the materials so that their full concentration is placed on expressing the model's presence and emotion. My goal is to give this class a sense of community, where anything art related can be discussed (books, galleries, artists, techniques), debated, enlightened and experienced.

You can check out David Kassan's demos on his Youtube Channel http://www.youtube.com/user/DavidJonKassan

Mothers also want their children to save money. Medical school costs about $200,000. This anatomy course costs $300, which is almost free. If you register by May 15, it's $260, which is like getting paid to take it.

Sign up before May 15 and make your mother happy.

June 2-4, 7, 9-11 at the Brea Civic & Cultural Center. All evening sessions, 6-10 pm.
Go read all that info at http://marshallart.com/anatomy Or register at http://marshallart.com/reg where there's a downloadable flyer for you to print for Mother's day in case she'll pay your way.
