Head Drawing with Rey Bustos - January 13th

In this class, students will learn how to quickly block in the general features of the head and neck. Through analysis and lectures of the skull and muscles of the head and neck, students will gain knowledge that will better their drawing, painting, and or sculpting skills. Through moderate-length poses, no more than an hour, each student will be able to more economically draw out the features of a specific likeness or a general representation of the human head. Each student will be asked to compile reference from classical art or even personal photographs.

This 3-hour lecture based on the instructor's book "Framed Ink" (focusing mainly on storyboard and graphic novel) starts off with a general view on the art of visual narrative. Perception of facts in different ways, depending on light and other circumstances will be addressed. Representation of reality will be discussed, showing the many different narrative possibilities.

There will be an analysis of how, based on these principles, we can compose meaningful shots both steady or with a moving camera, all of it while showing slides that refer to each specific case.

Attendants will be able to interact with the lecturer and ask questions referred to the subject at any time, having a special section at the end for Q&A only.

Entertainment Layout Design with Mauricio Abril

The class will begin by analyzing traditional painting for its mastery of composition and visual storytelling and will quickly move to understanding how those elements have been applied to modern day formats. Through various assignments, students will better understand how the fundamental design principles of shape language, rhythm, gesture, and proportion serve the composition’s greater purpose of telling a compelling story. These assignments will include but are not limited to film studies, master studies, and project oriented thumbnail sketching ultimately leading to final layout drawings. Instruction will also include practical technical information regarding the pipeline for completing a finished layout and the various media one can use in that process.

Mauricio Abril is currently a concept artist at Disney Interactive Media Group. He graduated with honors in Entertainment Design from the Art Center College of Design and has a previous degree from UCLA in Molecular Biology. His work spans the formats of animated video games, live action film, toy design and theme park design for clients such as Hasbro, The Hettema Group, Wideload, Rubicon and Elements Entertainment.

As a veteran artist and fine arts instructor, Nathan Fowkes has spent many years studying and teaching the use of gouache and other water-based media. He has applied his experience to fields as diverse as theme park show design, traditional animation, his own personal work and on site landscape sketching. For this workshop, Mr. Fowkes will present both fundamentals and advanced techniques for creating dynamic images with traditional gouache and watercolor media. The workshop will include:

• The fundamentals of picture making with water-based media.
• Principles for organizing the complexities of color into pleasing harmonies.
• Techniques and tips on materials and the painting process.
• Instructor demonstration from a costumed model.
• Student painting time from a costumed model with instructor feedback.

Casts and Still Life
There will be a morning session (10am to 1pm) and an afternoon session (1:30pm to 4:30pm) of uninstructed classes for your enjoyment.

Casts Drawing/Painting - Students will be able to either draw or paint from a cast. Sight-size is a method of drawing and painting an object exactly as it appears to the artist on a one to one scale. A sight-size drawing or painting can result in an accurate and realistic piece of artwork.

Still Life - Students may paint from nature or man-made objects provided by the school. Each set-up will be in a Fall Foliage Theme.

Students will need to bring drawing/painting supplies. LAAFA will provide: Drawing Benches, Easels, Casts, and Still Life set-ups.

Working stations are available on a first come basis.

Sculpting with David Simon

David Simon's sculpting class will be starting up this Tuesday, so sign up now if you're interested in learning how to construct a figure using oil clay.

LONG POSE FIGURE SCULPTURE

This class will focus on teaching the student to accurately represent the complexities of the human form. The use of proportional systems to funnel observation into an accurate sculptural representation of the figure will be introduced. This class will stress the synthesis of anatomical knowledge and observation. Students will learn how to correctly set up an armature and will be instructed in the proper use of modeling tools. There will be one pose for the duration of the course, and students may choose to work at either a 30” or 36” scale.

First of all, there is Artists Wanted: A Year in Review, an international, all-medium-encompassing open call for art. Participants have a chance to win $10,000 in grants and be shown in Scope Art Show in New York. They're on a mission to find the best emerging artists of 2010, so submit your work and stand a chance to be discovered.

Quick Sketch with Sergio

When faced with a model and only 5 mins to capture gesture, proportion, and form, many of us falter and are unsure of what to do. Learning to quick sketch is a skill that requires training, but more importantly requires a structuring of one's thinking process.

In this course, the student will focus on the study of the head and figure through a series of gesture poses. The instructor will offer weekly in-class lectures and drawing demonstrations. Students will be introduced to the many facets of sketching the figure; line, mass, form, edges, lighting, etc. Students will be taught a series of shorthands for describing the figure to read 3-dimensionally.

From personal experience, Sergio is one of the best instructors to learn from because he breaks information down into an extremely logical, step-by-step process. He not only tackles drawing errors, he also addresses your process and method which is crucial to achieving consistency and confidence in your drawings.

2011 Winter Quarter starts January 10th!

We are excited for the new year to start at LAAFA. Once again we have great
new classes and students favorites coming-up this quarter.

Take a quick glance:

Will Weston (Art Center) will be teaching Composition for Animation and Film. This class students learn from both disciplines to compose well-organized pictures with depth and emotional content that will provide entry into the gallery world or into the field of visual development for animation or film.

For beginners Eric Pedersen will be teaching Drawing Fundamentals (Casts/Still Life/
Live Model). Student will understand the fundamental language (value, shape, proportion, and form) of representational drawing.

Have you ever wanted to paint? Ron Lemen will be teaching Painting the Figure. This is a really good basics oil painting class, very little painting experience is necessary to attend.

For some concept art, LAAFA will have Alex Ruiz teaching Environment Concept Design for 8- weeks. This class will cover many aspects of environment design from the perspective of the video game, film, and television, to comic books and graphic novels.

Douglas Kirk will be teaching Foreshortening: Dramatic Figurative Staging. The goal is to allow the artist to develop the use of foreshortening as a vital ingredient in the creative process and to make its employment an opportunity for experiencing joy and gusto in the drawing process.

Imaginatomy Sculpture by Rey Bustos. This class is designed for those who want to invent a completely imaginative animal or creature while keeping the same logic of human and animal anatomy.

Marcos Mateu - Drawing Storyboards/Graphic Novels with Light(Starts Oct. 23rd-8wks)

Saturday, 10am-1pm

Light is the element that will dramatically influence a set and the characters within. Depending on the use we make of it the perception of the image will change in order to fit the storytelling moment. In this course we will observe and ink on paper sets under different lighting conditions, in convincing and practical ways, to then apply these techniques to specific panels that will deliver the desired message to an audience. There will also be slide show, analysis and discussion of artwork examples.

Digital Character Design (using a Live Model & Photoshop) with Alex Ruiz (Starts Oct. 21st-8wks)

Thursday, 7pm-10pm

The focus of this course will be on digital character design, life drawing and painting using Adobe Photoshop and other digital techniques. The class also explores working with brushes and digital drawing tablets (such as those from Wacom.) with a LIVE model in the room to replicate through drawing and painting the human figure and translating it into character design for uses in film, games, and animation. Gesture, form, anatomy, will also be discussed in depth.

Aaron Westerberg

"From 2000 to 2005, Aaron Westerberg taught at the California Art Institute outside San Diego. Since then he’s been teaching figure drawing and portrait and figure painting at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art. In 2002 he was listed in Southwest Art’s “Twenty-One Under Thirty-One,” and in 2007 he was named one of the best 24 artists under 40 by The Artist’s Magazine. In May of this year, he received an honorable mention from the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition in Scottsdale, Arizona. Westerberg is represented by the Gardner Colby Gallery in Naples, Florida, and the Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona."
